Four years ago Philippe Comtois's career appeared to be over. In April 2000 in Sheffield, England Comtois shattered his left leg during warm-up on the three-metre springboard. He broke his femur and tore three ligaments. He underwent two major operations lasting more than five hours each. Needless to say he missed the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
But he'll be in Athens and a medal is within sight. Comtois forms a strong duo with Alexandre Despatie on men's synchronized 10-metre. The pair won the bronze medal at the FINA World Cup last March at the Olympic pool in Athens, the third most important competition in the sport after the Olympics and world championships.
Before the emergence of Despatie, Comtois was Canada's top diver establishing record performances on men's three-metres.
