ASK SLAM!

By CHRIS NICHOLS -- SLAM! Sports
Hello there Chris: I need some advice pretty badly. I have had a solid team in my fantasy sports league. I have been in first place for 15 consecutive weeks until now. I feel my team is really slipping and I need to do something.

A few of the guys on my team I'm getting kind of tired of are: Weight, Demitra, Forsberg and Savard. There is a guy in my fantasy pool who is willing to trade Zetterberg and Morrow for Forsberg and Demitra. Would you do this trade? What kind of advice can you give me on those players? I am allowed to make unlimited drops in this pool.

Please help,

JR

I'm putting this question first in the column to demonstrate a point: panic is not a good thing in fantasy leagues. That trade would seal your fate and you'd finish no higher than second. Demitra was hurt, so he wasn't producing. He'll put points up, as will Forsberg when he finally comes back. Be patient with Savard and Weight. Savard's injury doesn't look like a season-ended at this point.

There may be free agents you can grab and drop some of your fringe players, but none of the guys you've mentioned so far are fringers. Check out my Fantasy Scoop columns and the others ones I write around the net to see who's hot and could help you sustain this lull in production.

Chris: I'm in a franchise points only pool and have no roster moves remaining. However, I still have a chance to finish in the top 3. Our trading deadline is Friday Mar. 5th. What do you think of the following trade:

My: M.York & E. Jovanovski

for

His: P.Kariya & B.Leetch

I think Leetch will be the most productive player in the trade for the remainder of the year. However, assuming you keep enough players that Jovo would be a keeper - I would not deal him for that little.

I just offered a guy my Demitra for his Kubina. I have two days to cancel the trade and I am wondering what you think. Thanks.

It depends on your team needs. I think Demitra is worth more than Kubina, but if you really need D points and have enough depth at F, it's ok.

Hey Chris: It's crunch time, and thanks to all of your advise this season! Our playoffs start next week, and I was curious if I should drop Kariya for Whitney?

I think that's a push. I have no problem dropping Kariya for someone productive, but Whitney hasn't taken off yet, despite playing with Lang and Yzerman. Kariya has more upside.

A couple of trades I need your expert opinion on for my H2H 12 team league that counts G, A, PIM. +/- and SOG in addition to Wins, Saves, Losses, SO etc. 1) My Turco and Kovalev for his Weekes/Fedorov/Tkachuk. My other tenders are Kipper, Esche and Grahame. 2) Turco/Kovalev for Cloutier/Feds/Doan. He really wants Turco and I have to admit I don't like Weekes. His other wingers are Hejduk, Shanny and Murray which I could try and trade for. He also said I could take Lang if I prefer over Feds.

After feeling each other out over the last week or so we are at a stalemate as he has offered Weekes/Feds/Doan and I rejected while I countered with Clouts/Feds/one of Tkachuk/Hejduk/Shanny and he rejected. I think we are close but I need some help and don't want to make a bad deal with our playoffs around the corner. Thanks for all your help!!!

The best advice I can give you is to not deal Turco. If you do, it's got to be straight up for Hejduk. I feel comfortable with you having Esche and Kipper in net, but Turco is too hot to get anything less than a stud like Hejduk.

Hey Chris: Your advice has helped me in the past. I was able to trade Weight on his downswing for Iginla on his upswing and I have been moving up in the standings ever since. Right now I have my eye on Zhamnov; I think he's been producing really well in Philly. My team is solid so it's hard to find someone to drop but the candidates right now are: Doan, Gomez, Zetterberg, or Sopel. Granted these are all good players, but they aren't getting a point per game right now that Zhamnov is. What do you think I should do?

Bob Mello
Nice deal for Iggy. If you can get Zhamnov by giving up Sopel, do it.

Hi, Chris! With the sick joke out that Forsberg might be done for the regular season, I think I hit the panic button! No, I haven't dropped him, yet, but with Datsyuk my only other C I went ahead and dropped Dany Heatley for Petr Nedved, who just got traded to the Oil! I know how you were telling me before not to drop him, but alas, I did! I'm in a basic Yahoo! H2H league where we only play 6 players in a weekly match up. My lineup, as of now, looks like this:

G: Aebischer
G: Kiprusoff
C: Datsyuk
C/LW: Forsberg
C/LW: Nedved
LW: Modin (I had picked up Kovalev the night before after hearing he was traded to Montreal, but seeing Modin was available and my opponent this week has 3 TB players going, I quickly dropped him to pick up Modin)
LW: Zetterberg
RW: Bondra
RW: Mogilny
D: Leetch
D: Gonchar
D: Blake

I'm currently in fourth, 9 points out of first, this being the last week before FHL playoffs. I'm currently playing the fifth place team (tight match up); and if things stay the same, I'll be playing him again next week in my first-round match up. Were my moves more costly then helpful? I was also wondering if I should try to pick up C Spezza and drop Nedved, or dare I say it, Forsberg. Right now he's on waivers, and IF I get him, it'll be no sooner than for Monday's lineup. Thanks!

Benjie

Ouch. Dropping Heatley was a big mistake. I'd be patient with Forsberg, because his upside is so big. The downside of owning him, of course, is the agonizing waiting in between played games.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
