ASK SLAM!

By CHRIS NICHOLS -- SLAM! Sports

Would you do this?
I give: Lang, Nabokov, Mike York, and Boucher
I get: Naslund, Modano, and Luongo

My centers will then be Modano, Lecavalier, and Jokinen (unpredictable guys) and my goalies will then be Roloson, Weekes, Luongo, Giguere, Turek, Fernandez, and Hasek. My LW would be Naslund and Samsonov. I am hoping that Modano can come back and do at least close if not equal to Robert Lang's output. O yea, in my league goals are worth more than assists. Thanks!!
 Stephen

Seven goalies? That seems like a bit of overkill. You may want to see if you can get a nice forward back instead of Luongo, because you really don't need him. With the Minny goalies and Weekes you'll have great stats. You can keep Turek if you want and then have some trade bait if he hangs onto the starting job after Kipper comes back. Hasek is the ace in the hole if he gets healthy and Giguere....well, hopefully he'll come around. I like the fact that you're getting Naslund and Modano - that's a nice swap.

Chris: My goalies (Hasek and Jiggy, and whoever is slightly hot and available, like

Denis and Biron, currently) are KILLING me. Typical ESPN roto league, and I've been offered Aebischer and Modano for Tkachuk and Jovo....my offense and defense are all 8's or better, but my goaltending is 2-1-2 for points. I tried countering just one of them for Abby straight up, but no dice...should I accept his proposal??
 You rock, John

One thing to remember for next season is this: When you don't have a good goalie to play, don't play any at all. You should have been fine with Hasek and Giguere in net, but we all know their stories. Denis plays for a team that does not have good defensive stats and Biron is a streaky goalie.
We're already halfway through the season, so you're not going to be able to make up too much ground in net. I'm sure if you shop Tkachuk around you could get a goalie of Aebischer's caliber in a one-for-one deal. That said though, it's really not a bad deal. I think Modano should be fine the rest of the way.

Chris: In a keeper pool, what do you think of my D. Weight for R. Nash? Also, what are your thoughts on Zherdev?

Assuming you count shots and PIM's, I would make that deal in a second. Nash is already a great goal scorer and should be the next big power forward in this league. Zherdev has amazed me each and every time I watch a Columbus game; which I'm doing more and more of each week because of Zherdev and Nash. Keeping Zherdev would depend on how many players you keep year to year and the depth of your league.

With the return of Roman Turek to the Flames, will Jamie McLennan's playing time go down, and if so, is he worth keeping around, especially if other goalies are available? Thanks!

McLennan's fantasy value is virtually zilch right now. Turek is going to play every game until Kipper comes back and then the fight for the starting job is on between those two.

Is Steve Thomas worth the pickup? I'd have to drop someone like Nik Antropov or one of my D like Boyle or Kalinin. It's a basic yahoo head to head pool. I have a fair number of RW's already, but am debating whether it's worth the switch.
 Ben

In my mind, Thomas is a more consistent producer than Antropov.

Hey Chris: Long time reader, first time writer....I'm in a Yahoo League I'm heavy in Centers (Damphousse, Roenick, Forsberg, Demitra) and light in the Right Wing now that Palffy is out (Murray, Satan), I've been offered Jeff O'Neill for my Damphousse....Do you think this would be a good move for me to make?
 Thanks, P.

I think that's a great deal, especially given your depth at center. O'Neill has been playing really well lately and on top of that, is heavily rumored to be moved to another team soon. Both factors mean the deal is a win-win for you. Even if he isn't traded, the deal is good.

Chris, thanks for all your help, but I need some advice once again. We have limits on positions in our league and I'm already projected to be over on goalies and forwards but under on defense. I have strong goaltending (Nabokov, Aebischer, Turco, Turek, Kiprusoff (IR) and some good forwards. I really need a good D man though. I'm being offered his Jeremy Roenick and

Mathieu Schneider for my Nabokov and Savard. I know Roenick is good, but I'm afraid Savard will heat up again and burn me. Also Nabokov is 10-2-2-2 since coming back, is he too valuable for this deal?
 Thanks, Chris

I think Savard is too valuable for that deal. I would deal Nabokov for Schneider straight up.

I just got offered a trade and I need a quick bit of advice. I would give up Elias and Kenny Jonsson for either Hejduk or Thornton. Which would you take if either?

I would do that deal quickly and take either guy. Hejduk might be slightly favored if your league counts +/-.
