ASK SLAM!
By CHRIS NICHOLS -- SLAM! Sports
I read your column daily and struggle on the weekends without you so I read your Friday column at least 3 times! Just wanted to say thanks. Because of you I have gone from 9th to all alone in 2nd in my Yahoo H2H league. I can't catch 1st but he knows I'm gunning for him come playoffs!
Jason, Nashville, TN
Thanks Jason. I'm glad you've pulled yourself up near the top and nothing tops the feeling of passing team after team in your league on the way to the top. Good luck in the playoffs.
Hi Chris: Quick question. I'm in a keeper league, (pts. and +/-, but not PIM), and I'm trying to fix up my protection list. I have Derek Morris, but he's obviously struggling. I could trade for Berard. Who would you rather have on your protection list for next year? (Especially given Morris trade rumors and a possible lockout). Any advice you could give would be great. Thanks for your time.
Morris has performed well below expectations, but Berard has a lot less talent to play with now. Still, Morris has done bubka with Rob Blake on the shelf, so I'd probably have to go with Berard.
Hi Chris: Thank you for your help! AGAIN!! I'm second in a 12 player yahoo H2H that count 10 stats, with less then two weeks for trades and the beginning of the series. I have 3 injured (Jovanovski, Conklin and Samsonov). Kiprusoff and Brodeur are good in net but I like 3 goalies. In defense, I have only 4 regular plus Jovo in my only IR spot. My question is should I drop any of these players and which one should I keep in my IR spot. Here is a list of the best FA: Goalies: Fernandez, Garon and Huet, Defense: Flip Kuba, Andrei Markov and Marek Malik, in front: Turgeon, Selanne, Andreychuk and Gionta.
Yves
I think your goaltending is fine and you should not mess with it by adding anyone. I'd drop Andreychuk and add Markov though.
Hey Chris, solid advice as per usual, I am still doing well in my pool and I still read your column daily, coincidence? I just wanted to know your thoughts on these available FA's in my league: bonk, Legwand, Kovalev, Gomez, Lindros, Modin, draper and Simon. Players I can drop are m. bell, Spezza, LeClair, Samsonov and Jokinen. Also, which two d would you want most for the rest of the year: redden, Zubov, Boyle or Pitkanen? Thanks in advance
I would drop Bell and add either Gomez or Simon. Simon would obviously be a big PIM's boost while Gomez is at least temporarily hot. Simon is a better long term option if you need penalty minutes, because Gomez will not continue scoring for more than a few weeks. Kovalev could be on the move soon, so you could stash him on your bench for now. Redden and Zubov would be my main choices on D.
Hi Chris, thanks for your reply to my last email. My question this time is about Derek Morris; I have him the whole season, but I rarely play him, as he never got on a hot streak. I'm thinking about dropping him and adding a Habs D (Brisebois or Markov) other available defenseman: Sean Hill, Zhitnik, and Sydor.
Thanks. KC
I never would have said this a month ago, but drop him for Sean Hill.
I recently dropped Jovo for Jonsson and Selanne for Gaborik. Do you think that those were good or bad moves?
Brian Marissen
It's hard to say with Jovo since we really don't have a good time frame for his recovery. Assuming you mean Kenny Jonsson and not Kim Johnsson (Common spelling mistakes I see in the emails), it's a bit of a gamble... but at least he's healthy and playing.
The Gabby for Selanne move is very good for you though, given Selanne's horrible production.
Who do you like better as a pick up Mogilny or Zhamnov?
Thanks again Chris
It sounds like Mogilny is a little frustrated with his hip now, so maybe Zhamnov would be the safer pick.
