Jim Criner to coach Las Vegas team

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Longtime college coach Jim Criner was hired Thursday as head coach of the XFL's Las Vegas franchise.

Criner has more than 30 years of college experience, having coached at Utah, Cal State-Hayward, California, Brigham Young, Iowa State and Boise State.

He was also a coach with the Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe.

The Xtreme Football League also hired Bob Ackles as the team's general manager and Don Gregory as the player personnel director. Ackles joins the league after four seasons with the Miami Dolphins as director of football operations.

The Las Vegas team, to be named later, will play five regular season home games at Sam Boyd Stadium.

Other franchises will be in Chicago, Memphis, Tenn., Orlando, Fla., San Jose, Calif., Los Angeles, Birmingham, Ala., and New York/New Jersey. Play will begin in February.

The XFL is jointly owned by NBC and the World Wrestling Federation.
